In science fiction and fantasy artwork there are no boundaries to one’s imagination and creativity. In this course students will think creatively using their imaginations to come up with subjects for their artwork that do not exist in reality. Though the subject matter will diverge from reality, the depictions will be rooted in real world techniques. This will serve as the framework for learning about proportion, value, perspective, and other art principles and elements. The class will be looking at techniques of working professional artists to see how they identify problems in their artwork and then apply what they have learned to solve those problems. The out-of-the-box thinking that we will employ in this course will be useful to students no matter where life takes them. Without individuals who could conceive of ideas beyond the realm of scientific reality, cell phones, spaceflight, and the internet would all still be science fiction today.
